Recreation
We are just the place for you.
Decorah, Iowa, is not only an oasis of geological beauty in a mostly flat state, it also houses culture and recreation that provide a completely unique experience for a weekend, a week – even a lifetime.
In addition to the limestone bluffs that tower over the Upper Iowa River, visitors can explore a multitude of public parks – from the cool breeze that flows off the waterfall at Dunning Springs to the trails along the hills of Palisades or Phelps Park to a more relaxed walk through the butterfly gardens in the prairie below. The newly finished Trout Run Trail offers even more opportunity – on bike or foot – to discover the stunning region of Northeast Iowa.
Decorah is famous amongst anglers for its fantastic small stream trout fishing. “Driftless” means this region escaped the most recent glaciers and so maintained its Karst topography – limestone landscape characterized by caves, fissures, springs, sinkholes and seeps – perfect for great trout fishing. Streams are flowing and unfrozen year-round, so whether it’s time for spring’s fresh green carpet of grass or autumn with the areas many trees sporting a variety of vivid colors, you can expect your day of fishing to be full of truly amazing scenery, and of course, lots of bites.
